TIP - Establish Goals and Write Them Down.

MEMBER COMMENTS:

IMPORTANT - write down your goals and then periodically review them.

Be sure the goals you write down are clear and concise.

Also keep an equine business journal.  The size and type doesn't matter as long as you are able to record various information.  What may not seem particularly important at the time it is written down may be very important later.  If you like, you can jazz it up by including photos or drawings.

Those involved in the horse business should be very aware that long hours of work are involved.  Still, the ownership of a horse related business can be an exciting career opportunity, if not a dream come true.  It is why colleges and universities throughout the United States, and world for that matter, have whole curriculums based on equine science programs.

Execution matters more than dreaming.  Just do it!

Think about resale when purchasing. You may want to upgrade further down the line.

Address any problems or questions that arise as soon as possible.

Sure, people can tell you it's easy to make it in the horse business...but that would not be truthful.  Like any other business, it takes commitment and hard work.

If you ever have any questions, the PHRI (and not internet gossip) is the source for accurate information.

When ready to buy a Pintabian horse, work with a PHRI member that is supportive and willing to sell you a horse that fits your needs.

SH*T OR GET OFF THE POT!  Doing your homework is all fine and dandy but...  If you get distracted by details and don't act promptly, someone could snatch up your perfect Pintabian horse right out from under you.

...and it would be nobody's fault but your own.  I can't tell you how many times I have sold a horse and then had a half a dozen disappointed people telling me that they had wanted to buy it--when I had no way of knowing it because they hadn't told me or made an offer.  If you find the horse you want, purchase it!

The above comment is a bit rough around the edges but it is true.  I prefer to say, "You snooze, you lose."

Use the past as a guide and learn from your mistakes.

Do you have a dream?  It's never too late.  Take Ed Alvarez for instance.  After retiring, he set the aggressive goal of running marathons on all continents...and he accomplished this goal!  One of the most grueling was in Kenya where a zebra even had to be sacrificed so that lions would not eat any of the marathon runners!  Three lessons can be learned from Ed's story:  1) dream aggressively, 2) learn to adapt your dream to changing situations, and 3) protect your dream (even if that means feeding the lions).  To help make your own dream action plan, visit www.amfam.com/dreambank

TIP - Increase Income.

MEMBER COMMENTS:

If you have ever been a real estate agent, you know there are slow times and that cash flow can be an issue at times.  Find ways to diversify that will bring in much needed income while waiting for the sale of your Pintabian horse.

Yes, diversification is key.

In other words, don't put all of your eggs in one basket!

TIP - Reduce Expenses.

MEMBER COMMENTS:

Recyle and repain whenever you can.

Try paperless marketing.

Make cost effective decisions.

Registering your foals before December 31st of the year they were born will keep your registration fees as low as possible.

The same goes for filing Stallion Breeding Report forms.  If filed in a timely manner, the fee is a mere $10.00.  If filed late, the fee is a total of $35.00 ( which includes the late penalty).

See if you can negotiate down the price of feed or hoof trimming (while practicing your negotiating skills at the same time).

TIP - Become a professional.

MEMBER COMMENTS:

...and hang around professionals.

Professionals think about resale when purchasing. You may want to upgrade further down the line.

Surround youself with professionals you know and trust.

Never be afraid to ask others for advice.

Consider trading up.

Savvy comes with time and experience.
