Pintabian Online Horse Show Rule Book

A.  General Rules

01.
All owners of horses exhibited must be current members in good standing with the Pintabian Horse Registry, Inc.

02.
All horses must be registered in the Colored Division of the Pintabian Horse Registry, Inc.

03.
A photocopy of the Certificate of Registration must be provided to management in order to be allowed on the premises.  Be sure you have it with you.

04.
A current Coggins Test (within 6 months of arrival) and a current Health Certificate (withing 30 days of arrival) on each horse is required in order to be allowed on the premises.  Be sure you have them with you.

05.
Each horse must have a stall reservation.  Showing "out of the trailer" is not permitted.

06.
Stalls will be assigned and numbered by the Pintabian Horse Registry, Inc.

07.
All horses shall be taken to their assigned stalls immediately upon arrival.

08.
Stall decorations are strongly encouraged but are not required.

09.
It is suggested that a sign with the registered name of the horse be placed on the stall.

10.
Exhibitor passes will be assigned and must be worn to gain entrance to your stall.

11.
Exhibitors may exercise their horses in the arena or assigned area only.

12.
In addition to the class entry fees, a required one-time office charge of $15.00 per horse will be charged.

13.
A horse may be shown only once in each class.

14.
Each exhibitor will be identified by a number pinned on their back.
 

B.  Sportsmanship/Behavior/Safety

01. 
Good sportsmanship must be exhibited at all times.  Exhibitors and members of the audience will be barred from the show grounds for improper behavior.

02.
Humane treatment of the horses is paramount.  Cruel or abusive behavior will not be tolerated and is grounds for disqualification or dismissal by the judge or show management.


C.  Fitting of Horse for Show

01.
Horses should be well groomed and clean.  Clipping of long hair on the fetlocks and pasterns, under the chin and jaw, and around the ears is suggested.

02.
Pintabian horses are shown in all classes with a full, unbraided mane and tail.  Clipping of the bridle path area behind the poll is permitted but it is not required.

03.
Hooves should be clean and properly trimmed.  Horses may be shod but shoes are not required.  Hoof dressing or polish is permitted but is not required.


D.  Exhibitor Attire

01.
Properly fitting, neat and clean attire should be worn in all classes.

02.
Elaborate clothes are unnecessary.

03.
With the exception of the Creative Costume Classes, elaborate clothes will be given no consideration in the judge's placings.

04.
Either proper western or english attire may be worn.

05.
Tack should be appropriate to the attire in the performance classes.

06.
Proper western attire includes all of the following:  western boots, western hat or protective head gear, long-sleeved shirt, pants or jeans, and belt.

07.
Western vests, jackets, sweaters, and/or gloves are optional.

08.
Chaps are permitted in western Performance Classes and Game Classes but are not required.

09.
Proper hunt seat english attire includes all of the following:  boots, hunt cap or protective head gear, hunt coat, and breeches.  Gloves are optional.

10.
Proper saddle seat english attire includes all of the following:  boots, derby or soft hat or protective head gear, and saddle suit or solid coat with matching jodhpurs.  Gloves are optional.

11.
To protect individuals from injuries, arms must be covered with coats, jackets, or long sleeves that are worn down, when participating in any class.

12.
With the exceptioin of the Creative Costume Class, no short sleeves, T-shirts, or sleeveless shirts are permitted while competing or performing in the ring.


E.  Tack and Equipment

01.
Horses in Breeding Classes and In Hand Classes are to be shown in a Pintabian show halter.  Said halter is made of flat leather, with the exception of the throatlatch area which may be of flat or rolled leather.

02.
The halter may be brown or black in color and must be between 1/2" to 1" in width.  Nickel or brass hardware is acceptable.

03.
Matching leads are suggested.  A chain attached to the lead is permitted but is not required.

04.
Nylon halters, patent leather halters, stock type halters, Arabian type halters, and bridles are not permitted in Breeding Classes and In Hand Classes.

05.
Since the emphasis is on the horse, name plates, silver, jewels, decorations and/or other embellishments on the Pintabian show halters are not permitted in Breeding Classes and In Hand Classes.

06.
The type of tack and equipment used in Creative Costume Classes is completely up to the discretion of the exhibitor.

07.
All tack should be in good repair, with the main consideration being on its safety and strength necessary for control of the horse.

08.
Whips, bats, crops, quirts, and/or spurs are not allowed to be used in any class or on the premises.

09.
A western saddle must be used in all western Performance Classes such as western pleasure and trail, as well as in the Game Classes.

10.
In western Performance Classes such as western pleasure and trail, a western curb bit must be used in horses over 4 years of age.

11.
Horses under the age of 4 years may be shown in a bosal, D-ring snaffle, O-ring snaffle, egg butt snaffle, or western curb bit.

12.
The curb straps or curb chains used on the western curb bits must be flat and not less than 1/2 inch wide.

13.
Western reins may be split or romal.  Breastcollars and back cinches are optional.

14.
Name plates, silver, jewels, decorations, and/or other embellishments on western tack and equipment are not necessary but are permitted.  They are to be given no consideration with regard to class placings.

15.
Mechanical hackamores, martingales, tie-downs, skid boots, shin boots and bell boots are prohibited except in Creative Costume Classes and Game Classes.

16.
Cur straps or curb chains used on mechanical hackamores must be flat and not less than 1/2 inch wide.

17.
The carrying of lariats, hobbles, and slickers is optional.

18.
Draw reins are prohibited from all classes except Creative Costume Classes.

19.
Either Hunt Seat or Saddle Seat tack may be used in english Performance Classes but there may be no mixing of the tack and/or attire.

20.
Proper hunt seat tack includes a saddle (hunt, forward or dressage type) and bridle (snaffle, pelham or kimberwick) with caveson noseband.

21.
Breast plates may be used with hunt seat tack.

22.
Proper saddle seat tack includes a flat english saddle and a full bridle or a pelham with two reins.

23.
Hunt, forward and dressage saddles are prohibited with saddle seat attire.

24.
The judge may disqualify any entry using improper equipment or request the alteration of such equipment.


F.  Breeding Classes

01. 
Horses are judged entirely on their conformation and Pintabian horse type.  Tobiano markings are required but these markings shall not be a consideration in this class.

02. 
The exhibitor's showmanship is not a consideration but their personal appearance should be neat and their demeanor natural, confident and courteous.

03.
A well-fitting Pintabian horse show halter shall be used.  Both hands should be on the lead at all times.

04.
The horse must be able to walk, trot, turn, stop and back as directed by the judge.

05. 
When asked to turn in the opposite direction, the exhibitor should turn the horse to the right.

06.
When asked to trot, the horse should move out willingly and with vitality.  The handler should always be in complete control.  The horse should not break stride or get out ahead of the handler.

07.
When posed, the horse should stand squarely with all four feet directly underneath.

08.
Pose the horse by pressure on the lead.  Exhibitors should not position the legs with their foot or hand.

09.
Stretching of the stance or neck to accentuate particular conformation traits is not allowed.

10.
Know where the judge is at all times and keep the horse posed.

11.
Always give the judge the very best view of your horse.  Do not stand directly in front of the horse or between yourself and the judge.

12.
If asked to change position in the line-up, back your horse out of the line and approach the new position from the rear.

13.
Exhibitors should keep showing their horse until the entire class has been placed and excused. 


G.  In Hand Performance Classes

a.  Triathalon

01.
This is a timed event at the trot.

02.
Horses will be lead over a series of three obstacles.

03.
A diagram of the pattern will be posted at least one hour before the class.

04.
Horses should trot between obstacles and may walk or trot over the obstacles.

05.
Breaking into a canter or lope is a disqualification.

06.
Breaking the pattern is a disqualification.


b.  Catalog Trot

01.
This is a timed event at the trot.

02.
A barrel with a catalog on top of it is placed near the end of the arena opposite the starting line.

03.
When the horse is lead in the ring by the handler, the handler is told a page number by show management.

04.
The handler trots his horse to the barrel, finds the page number assigned and tears it from the catalog, and then trots back across the finish line.

05.
Breaking into a canter or lope is a disqualification.


c.  Freestyle Longeline

01.
Horses are worked on a longe line by the handler for approximately two minutes.  Routines over two minutes may be penalized.

02.
Horses should be able to walk and trot in both directions, reverse and stop on command.

03.
Commands may be verbal or non-verbal.

04.
The routine is up to the handler.

05.
Emphasis is on training, willingness, manners and audience appreciation.


H.  Creative Costume Classes

01. 
This class is judged on creativity, audience appreciation and manners.

02.
Weanlings and yearlings are to be shown in hand.

03.
Horses two years of age and older may be shown in hand or under saddle.

04.
For safety reasons, be sure to leave plenty of space between your horse and the horse in front of you.


I.  Performance Classes

01.
Appropriate western or english attire, tack and equipment is to be worn in the classes.


a.  Walk/Trot Western Pleasure

01.
Horses are to be shown as a group.

02. 
Horses are to be shown at a walk and jog-trot in both directions along the rail.

03.
Horses are to reverse away from the rail.

04.
Horses shall be asked to back.

05.
Emphasis is to be on performance, manners and the ability of the horse to provide a pleasurable ride.


b.  Western Pleasure

01.
Horses are to be shown as a group.

02.
Horses are to be shown at a walk, jog-trot, and lope in both directions along the rail.

03.
Horses are to reverse away from the rail.  Horses are not to be asked to reverse at the lope.

04.
Horses shall be asked to back.

05.
Emphasis is to be on performance, manners and the ability of the horse to provide a pleasurable ride.


c.  Walk/Trot English Pleasure

01.
Horses are to be shown as a group.

02.
Hunt seat or saddle seat attire, tack and equipment may be used but a combination of the two on the same entry is not allowed.

03. 
Horses are to be shown at a walk and trot in both directions along the rail.  An extended trot may be requested by the judge.  Horses may be asked to back.

04.
Horses may be reversed by either turning towards the rail or away from the rail.  Horses are not to be asked to reverse at the canter or hand gallop.  Horses may be asked to back.

05.
Emphasis is to be on performance, manners and the ability of the horse to provide a pleasurable ride.


d.  English Pleasure

01.
Horses are to be shown as a group.

02. 
Hunt seat or saddle seat attire, tack and equipment may be used but a combination of the two on the same entry is not allowed.

03.
Horses are to be shown at a walk, trot, and canter in both directions along the rail.  An extended trot and/or hand gallop may be requested by the judge.  Horses shall change gaits from a walk.

04.
Horses may be reversed by either turning towards the rail or away from the rail.  Horses are not to be asked to reverse at the canter or hand gallop.  Horses may be asked to back.

05.
Emphasis is to be on performance, manners and the ability of the horse to provide a pleasurable ride.


e.  Walk/Trot Trail

01.
A series of five or more trail obstacles will be arranged throughout the arena.  A diagram will be posted at least one hour before the class.

02.
Contestants may walk or trot between obstacles.

03.
Horses will be judged on performance over the obstacles, response to the rider, attitude, and calmness.
